SSS Accuses Sanusi Of Financing Terrorism

follow @tatafonaija BB Pin-23580A61

The Department of State Security Service, SSS, has accused the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Lamido Sanusi of financing terrorism.

The SSS stated this on Monday at the Federal High Court, Lagos, while defending its decision to seize Mr. Sanusi’s international passport.
Mr. Sanusi’s passport was seized on February 20, as he arrived the Lagos international airport, hours after he was suspended as Central Bank Governor by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The new charge, which Mr. Sanusi’s lawyers described as false and baseless, tallies with a similar surreptitious but baseless allegation thrown at the bank chief by a presidential aide.

On whether he was on notice with respect to his suspension: Well, I have been told by my office that a letter was received. As you know, I flew in this morning to Niamey along with other Governors of West African Central Banks to meet with the President of Niger and President of Ghana…Fortunately, I came in with my VP Sarah Alade whom I have been asked to hand over to. I have left the meeting to hand over to her. I have just met the Nigerian Ambassador to Niger who confirmed to me that the President asked him to inform me of the decision.
On accusations of “various acts of financial misconduct and recklessness” he said: I don’t know what they are talking about. When I come back, I will see what those allegations are…I don’t think there is any issue raised that has not been raised before. We all know what this is about. This is about consequences for decisions I have taken… This is something that is long overdue. I am surprised it took them so long.

Having taken special notice of reports of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria and other investigating bodies, which indicate clearly that Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’s tenure has been characterized by various acts of financial recklessness and misconduct which are inconsistent with the administration’s vision of a Central Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management, prudence, transparency and financial discipline;

Yesterday, the Senate held an investigative meeting over missing crude oil revenue.

In his opening remarks, Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman of the Senate committee on Finance, explained that the meeting was dedicated to the issue of unremitted revenue by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He recalled that the last hearing in December 2013 was suspended to allow the involved parties to reconcile the figures.

Two ministers [most likely, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Diezani Allison-Madueke] had the permission to be absent due to ill health. Nevertheles, the Committee expects them to appear next week.

Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, CBN Governor, stated that the NNPC shipped $67 billion worth of crude oil, but what came to the CBN after all reconciliation stands at $47 billion.
