“When I was in the university, I was a member of the Pyrates Confraternity.

Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 19 gubernatorial election in Edo state has denied pouring acid on a fellow student during his undergraduate days at the University of Benin.⁣

In 2016, the former Chairman of the APC and ex-governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole had alleged that Ize-Iyamu poured acid on a student.⁣

Debunking the allegation on an online television programme in Benin on Sunday, July 5, 2020, the politician said contrary to the claim, he drew the attention of the then university management to the plight of the student.⁣

He said despite the fact that he ensured the student got first aid treatment, he and others linked to the incident were rusticated because the identity of the culprit was never known.⁣

Narrating the incident, he said, “When I was in the university, I was a member of the Pyrates Confraternity. At that time, we didn’t look at it as a cult arrangement but some people were already coming in with tendencies to create problems. We had this very confrontational group and one evening, somebody reported to us that they beat up a final year student who was also close to us and they mentioned the names of those involved, and we said no, this is bad.⁣

“Don’t also forget too that I was a students’ union leader, very prominent in the students’ union congress. So, myself and some persons who heard about this complaint said let’s go and see the people concerned and talk to them.⁣

“We went there and met with the people concerned. They opened the door for us and we were discussing the matter under a very cordial atmosphere only for some people to come in and before we knew it, there was smoke in the whole place and somebody shouted acid and was screaming. It was then I realised that somebody has poured acid on somebody and I quickly rushed to the security post. I brought them in and we took the young man to get first aid treatment.⁣

By the grace of God, victory is going to be ours at the end of the day. “I want Mr. Chairman to thank my co-aspirants for being gracious enough to take the painful decision to step down after committing so much.” Obaseki also announced that he was running with his deputy governor, Philip Shuaibu, saying, “You don’t change a winning team.” Two of his co-aspirants who stepped down, Keneth Imasuagbon and Gideon Ikhine, also attended the event.

Gov Wike pulls out of PDP reconciliation in Edo state,

Gov Wike pulls out of PDP reconciliation in Edo state, vows to fight those attacking him in PDP.

I told them that in Edo State, we must handle the issue carefully and carry everybody along. They must respect human beings and not behave like tax collectors.

They said because an order was obtained from a  Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, then I am responsible. .
I don't dislike critics, but I dislike people pontificating from a position of Ignorance - Chinua Achebe.I have had sleepless nights to resolve the issue in Edo state. The Governors of Edo, Adamawa, and Delta states, know what I have done to resolve the issues in Edo state.

As a result of this senseless accusation, I have pulled out of Edo State settlement. My integrity matters.

I have also directed my lawyer to write ThisDay Newspaper on the publication they made against me in their Tuesday,23rd June, 2020 edition.I know the members of the National Working Committee of PDP who connived with ThisDay. They are tax collectors. Let them challenge me and I will come out with more facts.
Nobody will rubbish me by raising false accusations against me. I will fight back.I will no longer participate in any reconciliation and I wonder why the NWC now wants to consult Governors of the party.
Why did the NWC not consult with Governors in the case of Bayelsa State? If PDP is not careful, the crisis in the All Progressive Congress (APC) would  be a child's play.

I am brought up not to accept injustice, and that is why I keep speaking out on national issues. Nobody in PDP can intimidate Rivers State.Nobody can threaten me because I said things must be done constitutionally. I will always continue to satisfy my conscience.
From now on, I want to concentrate on the development of Rivers State.

Court stops Obaseki from PDP primary

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has barred Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State from participating in the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary slated for Thursday, June 25, 2020.

According to the court documents, which were made available to our correspondent, the suit was instituted by one of the governorship aspirants on the PDP, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who had vowed not to step down for Obaseki.

Ogbeide-Ihama, prayed the court to stop Obaseki from participating in the primary on several grounds.

A major reason by Ogbeide-Ihama was that Obaseki recently joined the party and that only those who purchased the forms during the stipulated window before the waiver granted Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress, should be allowed to partake in the primaries.

While the primaries of the PDP was scheduled for June 25, the Independent National Electoral Commission had fixed the governorship election for September 19, 2020.

Obaseki: Some APC governors are supporting me

Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo state, says some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are still supporting him despite his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Obaseki announced his defection to the PDP on Thursday following his disqualification from the primary of the APC.

The APC panel had cited “defective” certificates as the reason for screening him out of the race.

But speaking with reporters after being screened by his new party, the governor the same certificates that the APC rejected were the ones he presented to the PDP screening committee without any issue. “The screening was fair, it was very professionally done. You could see objectivity and I presented all my certificates- my secondary school, higher school, university and my National Youth Service Certificates, so that they can look at them and see if there are inconsistencies in them. You can ask the screening committee if there are any inconsistencies in any of them.” On his support base, he said: “I thank God that I enjoy national support not just from my colleagues from the APC. I think the support is national. There are elder statesmen who are apolitical, there are traditional rulers. “I have people from different spectrum of the society who come around to support. Generally, I think Nigerians are generally fair-minded people. They are people who do not accept injustice. “From what I have seen over the past several weeks and months, the support is just across board. It is not just from APC governors alone.” If he clinches the PDP ticket, he would swap roles with his rival in 2016. Osagie Ize-Iyamu, whom he defeated in the last governorship election, has crossed over to the APC and he is believed to enjoy the support of the leadership of the party.

Adams Oshiomhole, suspended national chairman of the APC, is believed to be supporting Ize-Iyamu.

Oshiomhole was instrumental to bringing Obaseki to power.

Uwa Omozuwa was a virgin before she was raped and murdered - Edo DG, Prof.Yinka Omorogbe reveals

Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof Yinka Omorogbe, has revealed that slain 100-level Microbiology student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Uwa Omozuwa, was a virgin before she was raped and murdered.
The AG was reacting to rumors on social media that the 22-year-old was pregnant for a pastor before she was raped and murdered inside a church last month.
Prof.Omorogbe denied the terrible claims during a protest organized by members of the Edo Women Development Initiatives on Friday, June 19, 2020.
The AG noted that the news of Uwa being impregnated by her pastor brought more pains to her grieving family.
She said, “We were all terribly shocked to see what happened to Uwa. It was terrible; it was a brutal experience. “We were further shocked by some of the different things we saw all over the place, particularly on social media, and that is why it is important we come here. “For example, we saw a terrible lie being peddled on social media, not regular press, that Uwa was impregnated by her pastor. That has been refuted, though it caused serious anguish to the family members. It’s a terrible story. “Though one cannot talk at this point, from the autopsy done on Uwa, it was clearly established that not only was she not pregnant, she was a virgin, so, how boyfriend and pregnancy came in, only God knows.” Omorogbe also went on to assure residents that the Edo State government is committed to ensuring total eradication of rape in the state. “All we are trying to do is to make sure there is no more rape in Edo State. Not only do I believe that rape can be totally eradicated in the state, but the government of Mr. Obaseki is also committed to ensuring total eradication of rape in this state.,” the AG said.

Edo 2020: I will make next move after meeting Buhari – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said that he would be making his next move after meeting with the President Muhammadu Buhari. Obaseki made this known via his Twitter handle on Sunday.

He tweeted, “I appreciate the sustained show of solidarity, support, and goodwill from Edo people and Nigerians in the face of injustice by the @OfficialAPCNg screening committee. I will be making my next move known after I complete consultations with my supporters and meet with @MBuhari.” The PUNCH reports that the Screening Appeal Committee of the All Progressives Congress had upheld the disqualification of Governor Godwin Obaseki from participating in its governorship primary in Edo state.

The appeal committee presented its report to the National Working Committee headed by Adams Oshiomhole on Saturday.

The committee led by Dr Abubakar Fari cited discrepancies in the dates on Obaseki’s University of Ibadan certificate.
Presenting the committee’s report, Fari said, “It is inconceivable that the same University will award two certificates with separate dates for the same graduate. We also find it difficult to vouch for the authenticity of his National Youth Service Corps certificate, there is no indication as to where he served. “We find that he should be disqualified.” Earlier, the screening committee of the party, headed by Prof Jonathan Ayuba, on Friday disqualified the governor and two others from participating in the party’s June 22 primary. The other two aspirants who were disqualified are Chris Ogiemwonyi and Mathew Iduoriyekenwen. Iduoriyekenwen was later expelled from the party, according to the National Working Committee of the party on Saturday.
The NWC headed by Oshiomhole also upheld the decision of the appeal committee.
Those cleared to take part in the primary were Mr Osaro Obaze, Dr Pius Odubu, and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

In the report received by Oshiomhole, Ayuba noted that Obaseki claimed to have obtained a Higher School Certificate from the Institute of Continuing Education in Benin but that he did not produce the certificate and that the document he did not produce the certificate and that the document he produced only attested to his attendance. He said further that the governor’s NYSC certificate reads ‘Obasek Godwin’ and that while this could be an error on the part of NYSC, the governor never took any step “to correct the anomaly.” Credit: punchnews

[BREAKING] Edo 2020: APC disqualifies Obaseki, two others from primary

The All Progressives Congress has declared the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and two others ineligible to contest in the July 22 governorship primary election in Edo State.

The screening committee announced the disqualification while presenting its report to the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee in Abuja on Friday.

Apart from Obaseki, the two other disqualified aspirants are Chris Ogiemwonyi and Mathew Iduoriyekenwen.

Chairman of the panel, Prof. Jonathan Ayuba, while presenting the report explained that Obaseki was disqualified because the committee could not vouch for the authenticity of the Higher School Certificate he claimed but could not produce.

The committee held that the document he produced only attested to his attendance. The seven-man screening committee led by Ayuba said the report is conclusive, adding that all members of the panel signed the report. Ayuba said the committee was thorough in the process of conducting the exercise, adding that the process was recorded and the unedited recording would be made available to the party.

I don’t believe I will get justice - Governor Obaseki says after APC screening

Governor Godwin Obaseki who has been caught up in a bitter faceoff with the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole, has stated that he doesn't believe he will be getting justice from a committee set up by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to vet aspirants seeking to get the party’s ticket ahead of the governorship election in Edo state.
The Edo state Governor's media aide, Crusoe Osagie revealed that he (Obaseki) was delayed for several hours before the screening which lasted for two hours.
Osagie said; “The governor arrived early but the screening committee was not ready. “He was given the options to either wait for one hour or if he had an appointment to keep, he could go and call them to know if they were ready. “The governor, who had a Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) meeting, went for the meeting and called when he was done, but the members of the screening committee did not pick their phones.” Governor Obaseki who spoke to newsmen after the screening, said he doesn't believe he will get justice because Adams Oshiomhole refused to recuse himself from the process.
Obaseki said; “Like I said, as a party man I had to go through the screening process but I do not believe that I will get justice because Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is an interested party in the Edo process,” the governor said. “One of the questions asked was why did I issue a gazette that will prevent the party from performing direct elections in Edo. That did I not see it as an anti-party activity?”
